The Magnetic Urtext: Restoration as Music Interpretation.

This paper discusses historical-critical thought to address the problems of restoration and preservation of tape music, proposing viable solutions to the matter of digitizing the historically valuable data that exists on and is represented by magnetic tapes. A detailed program of research and restoration and some software for helping in creation of critical editions of the musical works are proposed. We also present some of the issues and controversies that must be considered and approaches we have applied in the preservation of tape music, highlighting how these interpretations can impact later performances (playback) of these tape documents. Fundamentally, we argue that the act of tape music restoration has a parallel with the interpretation of the "Urtext score" in the performance of music from the Common Practice Era.

Del Hospício de Pedro II al Hospital Nacional de Alienados: cien años de historias (1841-1944) / From the Hospício de Pedro II to the Hospital Nacional de Alienados: a hundred years of records (1841-1944)

Resumen Esta nota de investigación expone perspectivas metodológicas, fuentes documentales, inscripción historiográfica y reflexiones que surgen de la investigación en curso, titulada "Del Hospício de Pedro II al Hospital Nacional de Alienados: cien años de historias (1841-1944)". Un grupo de investigadores y estudiantes asociados al proyecto han analizado la historia de la primera institución psiquiátrica de Brasil en el periodo comprendido entre la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y mediados del siglo XX. También están comprometidos con el ideal de contribuir a la organización y conservación de los fondos documentales de esta institución. Aquí presentamos el carácter innovador del proyecto, especialmente por sus perspectivas metodológicas en combinación con enfoques de preservación de documentos históricos.

Abstract This research note lays out methodological approaches, documentary sources, historiographical inscription and reflections that arose from an ongoing research study entitled "From the Hospício de Pedro II to the Hospital Nacional de Alienados: a hundred years of records (1841-1944)." A group of researchers and students involved in the project have analyzed the history of the first psychiatric institution in Brazil for the period from the second half of the nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century. They are also committed to the ideal of contributing to the organization and conservation of the documentary sources of this institution. Here we present the innovative nature of the project, especially due to its methodological approaches in combination with its focus on preserving historical documents.

PURPOSE: The analysis of historical death certificates has enormous potential for understanding how the health of populations was shaped by diseases and epidemics and by the implementation of specific interventions. In Brazil, the systematic archiving of mortality records was initiated only in 1944-hence the analysis of death registers before this time requires searching for these documents in public archives, notaries, parishes, and especially ancient cemeteries, which are often the only remaining source of information about these deaths. This article describes an effort to locate original death certificates in Brazil and document their organization, accessibility, and preservation. METHODS: To this end, we conducted an exploratory study in 19 of the 27 Brazilian states, focusing on the period surrounding the 1918 influenza pandemic (1913-1921). We included 55 cemeteries, 22 civil archives, and one military archive. RESULTS: Apart from few exceptions, the results show the absence of a curatorial policy for the organization, access or even physical preservation of this material, frequently leading to unavailability, deterioration, and ultimately its complete loss. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates the need to promote the preservation of a historical heritage that is a key to understanding historical epidemiological patterns and human responses to global health threats.

Plan de acción para la preservación documental en la biblioteca del Policlínico Norte del municipio Florida, Camagüey / Action Plan for document preservation at the library of the North Polyclinic in Florida, Camaguey

Objetivo: elaborar un plan de acción que contribuya a la preservación documental en la biblioteca del Policlínico Norte, de Florida, en Camagüey. Métodos: se realizó un estudio de evaluación durante los meses de marzo a junio de 2012. Se aplicó el método de análisis documental a una muestra de 325 documentos monográficos, con el propósito de identificar el grado de deterioro físico de la colección. Resultados: la observación permitió diagnosticar las condiciones de almacenamiento. Se aplicó también una matriz DAFO como instrumento gerencial. El fondo bibliográfico mostró elevados niveles de deterioro. Las condiciones de almacenamiento no propiciaban la preservación documental. Conclusiones: Se constató el predominio de las debilidades sobre las fortalezas, así como de las amenazas sobre las oportunidades, lo que ubica a la unidad en el cuarto cuadrante de la matriz. De acuerdo con esto, se propone un conjunto de acciones que eviten el incremento del deterioro(AU)

Objective: to develop an action plan that contributes to the documentary preservation at the Library of North Polyclinic in Florida, Camagüey. Methods: an evaluation study was conducted from March to June 2012. The method of document analysis to a sample of 325 case records was applied in order to identify the degree of physical deterioration of the collection. The observation led to the diagnosis of storage conditions. A SWOT matrix was also applied as a management tool. Results: the bibliographic showed high levels of impairment. Storage conditions were not conducive to documentary preservation. The predominance of the weaknesses of the strengths was found, as well as threats of the opportunities, which placed the unit in the fourth quadrant of the matrix. Accordingly a set of actions that prevent increased deterioration is proposed. The bibliographic showed high levels of impairment. Storage conditions were not conducive to preservation documentary. Conclusions: the predominance of weaknesses over strengths was found, as well as threats over opportunities, which places this unit in the fourth quadrant of the matrix.
